Growing Instructions for Thyme

Season: 

Summer and Winter 

Thyme is a perennial and grows well through summer as well as winter. 

 

Position: 

Full sun (mostly) 

Thyme thrives in full sun and loves heat. In hotter areas, it is advised to plant thyme in semi-shade during mid-summer. 

 

Soil ph: 

Between 5,5 and 7,5 

 

Watering needs: 

Thyme is a Mediterranean herb and does not need a lot of watering. Water about twice a week in summer and once a week in winter. 

 

Possible pests & problems: 

Pests and problems are very rare on thyme plants. 

 

Maintenance & Extras: 

Thyme is very easy to grow and does not need any extras. Cut back after flowering to ensure new (soft) growth. 

 

Additional fertilizers: 

Root feed (once every 3 months) 

 

Harvest: 

Thyme can be harvested any time of year. 

 

Cultivars: 

Many different Thyme varieties are available of which “common thyme” is the most popular for culinary use. Lemon thyme is also a great variety for culinary use. Varieties like creeping thyme and woody thyme are used as ornamental plants, but also a great addition to the vegetable garden. 

 

General: 

Thyme is very easy to grow and a great plant for the beginner gardener. Be careful of overwatering though, especially if you are gardening in pots. 

Thyme can be grown in containers of at least 15 to 20 cm deep. 

Thyme works well with other herbs like oregano, rosemary, lavender and marjoram, but is also a good companion for tomatoes, eggplant, strawberry and blueberry. Keep thyme away from basil, mint and fennel.
